A Lantern in the Window

Peter, who comes to stay with his Uncle Eb and Aunt Ellie on their farm, is sure he’ll be bored with the country and looks forward to the day when he can become a river pilot and enjoy the excitement of growing Cincinnati. But no sooner is he there than Uncle Eb begins to have mysterious conversations with a neighbor. As Peter realizes what is happening and even takes part himself in the escape of a Negro family hiding at Uncle Eb’s, he comes to understand that excitement in service rather than adventure for its own sake is the more important thing in life.
