Hound Dogs and Others

Jim Kjelgaard has assembled a group of appealing stories by the members of Western Writers of America, this time about dogs. Among the authors are such favourites as S. Omar Baker, Frank C. Robertson, Elliott Baker, Charley Niehuis and Jim Kjelgaard himself. The dogs include two dauntless guardians of their sheep under the greatest difficulties-plucky, independent little Miel, and the huge, ungainly blunderer, Bonehead. Other blunderbusses are Chulo, the flop-eared pup of young Cowhand Whistle, who spooked a bunch of deer and captured a bunch of bandits; and Towser the Terrific, who manages to get what he wants by just being himself-all mammoth poundage of him. There are pedigreed dogs, too, including the Irish setter dog show sinner who followed the scent of birds and found a man! And, of course, there are the beloved hound dogs, from those skilled in field trails to those who mostly make beautiful “hound music.”
