A story that explores the blessings of adoption
So many strange things are happening in this community.
Gordon's earlier thoughts came back to haunt him. Maybe God was sending him a message through all the brokenness he had been seeing. He had been protected from so much that was negative-probably from far more than he would ever know. Was my adoption a gift from God? he wondered.
Gordon had no doubt that his parents loved him as their own flesh and blood. But he had wanted to meet his birth family ever since he could remember. He belonged to them too, after all. "I know that Mom said that our birth parents were poor when we were when we were born, but they might have a lot of money by now," Gabrielle had said once. "Our mother could be an actress, or an author."
"For all we know, they're talented and popular," Gabrielle added dreamily. "I wonder what all we inherited from them? Maybe our Father is a rancher, and that's why you like to ride horses so much."
"And if our mother is an actress, maybe that's why a drama queen," he teased.
She turned up her nose and they dropped the subject. But Gordon had thought about it a lot ever since. As interesting as these mental pictures were, they knew was improbable. Would it be okay if they never found out?
Also, how could he embrace all the good parts of the Mennonite heritage when he hadn't been born into it? Was it possible, or would he forever need to feel like an outsider? So there he was again at full circle, no closer to peace than he was before.
