Longfellow wrote, “Into each life some rain must fall.” But for Joseph Martin, it’s more like a downpour. A Pennsylvania farm in the 1930’s may sound idyllic, yet for this Old Order Mennonite family, times are tough. Mother suffers from severe mental illness and her doctor institutionalizes her. Aunt Lizzie steps in to help with childcare and housework, but she cannot sweep away the rainclouds that roll into their lives.
Poverty plagues the family even after the war; prison awaits Joseph if he refuses to serve in the military; problems fitting in with the young folks seem impossible to overcome.
